This particular ride was, as I have said always going to be a short one, I did it following my previous trips from John O’Groats  & I wanted to do the part between Durham & Bishop Auckland so that I can start the next stage from Bishop Auckland & head south west into the Yorkshire Dales. This morning was an early ride out from Chester le Street alongside the mainly busy A167 trunk road into Durham where I’m boarding the 11:43hrs Virgin East Coast service to London Kings Cross. I know that the approach road to the rail station is very steep. The rail mileage from Durham to London Kings Cross is 258 miles which doesn’t really sound a lot, the journey time is around 3 hours 15 minutes including station stops along the route which…

Once I leave my hotel I’m heading for Chester le Street where I’m booked overnight in another Premier Inn. I’ll be using the old railway line between Bishop Auckland & Durham which is now a cycle & pedestrian route. On the outskirts of Bishop Auckland I’ll be passing under Newton Cap viaduct which once carried the railway towards Durham (see yesterdays posting for history).
